Pittsburgh-Area Sports: We added two images of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the 1964 charity baseball game against the Cleveland Indians (HYPO Game) and three images of the Cincinnati Reds arriving at the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport for a game against the Pirates during the 1960 season. One of the Pirate images include “The Deacon” Vernon Law, and Bill Mazeroski posing for a photo before the annual HYPO Charity baseball game. Additional background on the images; Forbes Field was a baseball park in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, from 1909 to 1971. It was the third home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the first home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the city’s National Football League franchise. The stadium also served as the home football field for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers from 1909 to 1924. The stadium was named after British general John Forbes who fought in the French and Indian War, and named the city in 1758.

My favorite image is of Bob Purkey Sr. of the Cincinnati Reds arriving at the airport for a game with the Pittsburgh Pirates – 1960. The on location photographic assignment was for United Airlines. The 1960 Cincinnati Reds finished in sixth place in the National League standings, 28 games behind the National League and World Series champion Pittsburgh Pirates! The highlight for me in this set of images was of the one of Bob Purkey Sr. I had the opportunity to know Bob Sr while playing high school baseball with his son, Bob Purkey Jr. For many years, Bob Purkey Sr had a successful insurance business in Bethel Park Pa.

Pittsburgh Business Images: We added 6 business-oriented images that include; two PR photographs of the owner of Samuel B Casey Company in Aspinwall Pennsylvania – 1962. Tee Samuel B Casey Company was a contractor on large commercial projects throughout the region including sections of the parkway; an addition to the former Kaufmann’s Downtown store; a swimming pool at Kennywood Park; and plant expansions for U.S. Steel and National Steel. The company purchased Swindell Dressler, another local engineering company, in 1959. Two images of a Saleswoman buying a new car from Don Allen Chevrolet – 1958. A Relax-A-Cizor salewoman sitting on a new Chevy from Don Allen. Relax-A-Cizor was a medical device similar to the abacizor and many other countless exercise devices on the market that claim to let you exercise while relaxing without effort. This is one of the early versions from the 1950′s. It is much better and more versatile than the ones made now. These devices don’t work for exercise purposes and many are unsafe. Two views of a secretary typing a letter – 1967. Cathy Stewart working in the offices of the National Union Insurance Company. Cathy left Pittsburgh for New York City in 1969. Over the next twenty years, she established herself as one of the top advertising executives in New York City. Working for American Home Products, a few advertising agencies before becoming the highest ranking woman at Shearson Lehman, American Express (VP of Marketing).

I created four (4) galleries on the website http://bradystewartphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-list; Bethel Park High School Images, Bethel Park Baseball Images 1961 – 1970, Bethel Park Pennsylvania Images, and Bethel Park Sports Images 1968 – 1980. All images in the blog and web site are copyrighted by Brady Stewart Studio Inc. If you are interested in downloading an image or to purchase a print, please contact Brady Stewart Studio by phone (724.554.9813) or email bstewartphoto@aol.com.

Bethel Park Boro: Bethel Park is middle class suburb south of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Bethel Park was established in 1866 and one of the keys to its growth were coal mines; Coverdale (Terminal H Mine) and Mollenauer. The growth after World War II paralleled most cities and states; the ongoing migration of the middle class from the city to suburbia. The good reputation of the area school districts; Bethel Park, Upper St Clair and Mt Lebanon also contributed to the overall growth of the South suburbs. Over the years, Bethel was a predominately catholic community with 3 large parishes; St. Valentines, St. Germain, St. and Thomas Moore. The Stewart family relocated to Bethel Park from Pleasant Hills, PA after the birth of their third child in 1953 (Michael Stewart). Marjorie Stewart, wife of Brady Stewart Jr, still lives in the house on Summit Street.

We were brought up catholics and went to St Valentines School and Church. I found images of my sister Cathy’s first communion in 1953… which also was year St. Valentines opened for business. Cathy and Brady Stewart III attended St Valentines for 8 years before moving over to Bethel Park High School. I attended St Valentines for three years before attending Hillcrest Elementary School. I moved on to public education after a few major disagreements with the Sisters (Nuns) at St. Valentines. As any of you fellow catholics know, at that time, you didn’t win ANY disagreements with Sisters! I digitized a few class photos of St Valentines and Hillcrest.

During the 1950s & 1960s, Brady Stewart Jr used family members as models for a number of advertising agency location photography shoots. I included digitized images of one for regional Volkswagen dealerships and local Grocery Store (Bethel Market).

Sports Photography: The quality of the sports-oriented images in the collection are a direct result of the work he did for the Steelers and Pitt during the 1950s. My father was hired part-time by John Campbell of Bell & Howell to photograph Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panther football games at Forbes Field and Pitt Stadium. During the early 1960s, a group of parents established the Bethel Baseball Association. This group was instrumental is building the foundation Bethel Park’s baseball excellence over the next 20 years. The success was a direct result of recruiting dedicated and qualified men to coach the children. I digitized a number of team photographs taken by Brady Stewart Jr. Growing up, baseball was my favorite growing up because of my success in BBA leagues and the ongoing success of the Pittsburgh Pirates. My favorite athlete to this day is Roberto Clemente. He was the only baseball player that I ever saw that came to play everyday and played at the highest level everyday. Other than the birth of my four boys, the greatest thrill of my life was playing right field in the 1970 WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League) Championship Baseball Game at Forbes Field. In right field, the Pittsburgh Pirate field crew burned a X where Roberto stood. During my three-year high school career, we played in two championship games at Forbes Field (1969 & 1970) and lost in the WPIAL semi-finals in 1971. We also had exceptional Colt and American Legion summer league teams during this time. One of the main reasons for our success was a boy named Bob Purkey Jr. Bobby was the son of professional baseball pitcher Bob Purkey who pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. Bobby Jr was on his way to the big leagues in 1972 when he succumbed to Sudden Death Syndrome (http://www.aafp.org/afp/1998/0601/p2763.html) that struck a number of young athletes at that time. There are some digitized images included in the galleries.

Bethel Park High School: In the fall of 1959, Bethel Park High School relocated to a parcel of land at the end of Broad Street and parallel to Church Road. Sophomores, juniors and seniors moved to the six-building campus, which consisted of two academic buildings, library, auditorium/cafeteria, physical education building and boiler house at a cost of $4.1 million for construction and equipment. Ninth graders stayed at the junior high. Digitized images of the campus and the 1964 football improvements are included. When I got to the high school in 1967, we had 4 academic buildings (9-12 grades), enlarged library, auditorium/cafeteria and athletic facilities.

During the 1960s, it was clear that Bethel Park football underperformed under then Coach and Athletic Director Dan Galbraith. The search committee was looking for someone who could make Bethel Park successful in one of the most competitive leagues in the WPIAL. Rudy Andabaker was hired as football coach in 1969. Rudy was a former star football player with PITT and the Pittsburgh Steelers before starting his coaching at Donora High School. Rudy was quite a contrast to the former Coach Director Dan Galbraith and his coaching staff. It took a year but starting in 1970, Bethel Park became a force in the Western Conference of the WPIAL Class AA. Rudy and his staff instilled a competitive mindset that was 180 degrees from the previous coaching staff. Rudy Andabaker staff included: Dick Mongelluzzo, Ron Eisaman, Frank (Biff) Baker, Art Tosh, John Meister, and Doug Behn. As a result, 5 players on the 1970 team received division I football scholarships and two other received Division II scholarships; the most scholarships in any one year in Bethel Park Football history. Mike Stewart and Joe Barrett (William and Mary), Dennis Franks (Michigan), Scott Streiner and Glenn Eisaman (Cincinnati), Jim Dingeldine (West Liberty College), and Clark Miller (Clarion). We all received very good educations because of Rudy and his staff. I digitized a number of images from the 1970 football season.

The last image in the group is of Armon Gilliam. Armon graduated from Bethel Park in 1981 and went on to have a very successful college basketball career at UNLV ”Running Rebels” and the 13-year career in the NBA. Armon was a defensive end on the 1980 Bethel Park High School football team. Due to one of the many Bethel Park teacher strikes, I was an assistant football coach for the 1980 & 1981 season along with operating Brady Stewart Studio Inc. Armon was a pleasure to coach and if we would have had him a year earlier, he probably would have had a football scholarship. As we say later in his life, he had an abundance of athletic talent. He left us way too soon passing away last year of a heart attack.

Bethel Park Images: As of this writing, 175 Bethel Park images are on the web site: http://bradystewartphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-list. All images in the blog and web site are copyrighted by Brady Stewart Studio Inc. If you are interested in downloading an image or to purchase a print, please contact Brady Stewart Studio by phone (724.554.9813) or email bstewartphoto@aol.com.

We added 15 new images to the Brady Stewart Collection Archive web site and created a new Gallery – New Images added in December 2011. The new images can be viewed at http://bradystewartphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-list. Moving forward, I will create a new image Gallery for each month. This should make it easier to view the new imaged added each month. At the same time, I will move a copy of the new image into its related Gallery. All images in the blog are copyrighted by Brady Stewart Studio Inc. If you are interested in downloading an image or to purchase a print, please contact Brady Stewart Studio by phone (412.999.0538) or email bstewartphoto@aol.com.

New Images for December 1, 2011:

The New Alcoa Building

1. Buildings and Architecture: Two images of the new Alcoa Building in 1953. One of the images includes the demolition of the People’s Gas Building to make room for Mellon Square (1955). The Alcoa Building was unique in many ways; a radiant heating and cooling system is contained in the ceiling. Since there are no pipes, radiators, or air conditioning units along the exterior walls, an additional 15,000 square feet of rentable space was gained. Windows rotate 360 degrees so they can be washed from the inside. The aluminum walls of the building are 1/8 inch thick, which gives the building a very light weight and economical design. It was the first skyscraper with an all-aluminum facade.

2. Pittsburgh Businesses: We added three images of the Gateway Clipper Fleet when it was moored next to the Monongahela Wharf. The business was founded by John E. Connelly and consists of a fleet of riverboats The fleet cruises the three rivers of Pittsburgh and hosts parties, tours and provides river transportation to sporting events. The fleet is named after the city, which in earlier times was known as the “Gateway to the West”. The original riverboat, the Gateway Clipper, set sail in 1958 (Image of the first boat is in the Gallery named “Pittsburgh Area Businesses”.

The New Gateway Center

3. Pittsburgh Point Photographs: We added three new images of the Point during the Gateway Center Construction. The three views of the construction from the South Side are unique to the Collection. The images were taken in the early morning by staff photographer, Ross Catanza.

Frick Park in Pittsburgh

4. Pittsburgh City Views: We added 6 new images of two of the largest city parks in the Oakland-area of Pittsburgh. We included two of Schenley Park and four of Frick Park. Schenley Park became a reality when in 1889, Mary Schenley gave the city 300 acres of Mt. Airy Tract with an option to purchase 120 more, provided the park be named after her and never sold. The city bought the extra acres in 1891, and later purchased some adjoining land to complete the park. The park system was a project developed by then Director of Public Works, Edward Bigelow. Schenley Park underwent a second period of growth in the 1930s and 1940s during Ralph Griswold’s tenure as the Director of Public Works. These images were taken after the second period of growth – 1952.

When Henry Clay Frick died in 1919, he bequeathed to the city 151 acres south of his Point Breeze mansion and provided a $2 million trust fund to help create the park and assist with its long-term maintenance. The city began moving in earnest to create the park in 1925, when it acquired 190 additional acres, presumably with the goal to create a park of similar size and scope to Schenley and Highland Parks. The park officially opened in 1927. Innocenti and Webel, among the most respected landscape architects working in the United States, who made the greatest impact on the park. Their work from 1935 to 1957 involved designing more trails, planning for structures, and ordering green spaces and plantings. The four images were taken during this time – 1952.

The new images can be viewed at http://bradystewartphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-list. All images in the blog are copyrighted by Brady Stewart Studio Inc. If you are interested in downloading an image or to purchase a print, please contact Brady Stewart Studio by phone (724.554.9813) or email bstewartphoto@aol.com.

Magic Lantern Slides

Pittsburgh www.pghphoto.org/. A few members of the group came to my presentation at the Mount Lebanon Historical Society in June and asked if I would like to speak about Lantern Slides in an upcoming meeting. Founded in 1885, my grandfather was a long-time member of the Academy and was Director of Lantern Slides from 1907 – 1912.While developing the Lantern Slide presentation, I learned a great deal about the history of Lantern Slides. During the 1900 century, Lantern Slides were the primary entertainment medium for individuals, businesses, educational institutions, governments along with entertainers.

1) Individuals: Similar to how we used 35mm slides for over 50 years, individuals took photographs while on vacation and had a local company produce lantern slides so they could show off to their friends, family and neighbors

2) Businesses: Similar to how businesses used 35mm slides and overhead transparencies, Companies would use lantern slides to introduce new products, educate employees, presentations for sales people and to solicit venture funding.

3) Educational Institutions & Museums: For over 100 years, colleges and secondary schools used lantern slides to educate their students on various subject matter; history, geography, marketing etc. Museums used lantern slides to show donors how their money was spent on expeditions; i.e. South Pole and Mount Everest, and how the museum would like to spend their money!

4) Governments: Great Britain used lantern slides for over 200 years to show nobility and other influential citizens about the British Empire. When officials visited South Africa, India, Hong Kong and other colonies, they would take photographs and have a British firm create the lantern slides for the presentations.

5) Artists and Entertainers: Throughout the 19th century, entrepreneurs traveled throughout Europe and America using Lantern Slides to sell products and services along with entertaining the masses. The most frequently requested presentations were Horror, Comedy and War stories. Interesting, during the early part of the 20th century, the most requested motion pictures were Comedy, War and Horror movies!

The presentation at the Academy was very special for me since the lantern slides I used during the meeting were the same my grandfather used for the same meeting 100 years earlier! Yes, my grandfather made a Lantern Slide presentation to the Photographic Section, the Academy of Science and Art of Pittsburgh in October 1911. My grandfather took the photographs, created the lantern slides and hand-colored them for the meeting. And to take a step back, a lantern slide is created by taking a photographic negative and sandwiching it together with another unexposed photographic negative to create a positive & transparent image. Once sandwiched, the negatives are exposed to light and processed in photographic developer. Once processed and dried, color can be added to the emulsion side of the “positive” with special dyes… it is a very time-consuming process.

Please take your time viewing the hand-colored lantern slides (http://bradystewartphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery/Hand-colored-Positive-Slides/G0000cPWtCKzQbiI/), they are special.

Duquesne Brewery was one of the few local brewers that survived Prohibition. After the end of Prohibition (1933), they became an independent brewery and developed a number of new beers which lead to Duquesne being the largest Brewery in Pittsburgh. The list of Duquesne Beers includes: 1) Frontenac Ale 1933 - 1951, 2) Old Nut Brown Ale 1934 - 1940, 3) Duquesne Beer 1934 - 1972, 4) Silver Top Beer 1934 - 1972, 5) Jumbo Beer 1935 - 1942, 6) Old Carnegie Nut Brown Ale 1935 - 1942, 7) Old German Beer 1935 - 1942, 8) Old Monastery Beer 1935 - 1942, 9) Duquesne Pilsner Beer 1935 - 1961, 10) Duke Ale 1936 - 1940, 11) Anteek Beer 1936 - 1941, 12) Silver Top Ale 1938 - 1944, 13) Sport-I-Duke Beer 1954 - 1957, 14) Duke Beer 1957 - 1972, 15) Buccaneer Beer 1960 - 1961, 16) Steeler Beer 1961 - 1962, and 17) Bavarian Beer 1961 - 1972.

The brewery had three plants in the Pittsburgh area; 1) Carnegie, 2) McKees Rocks and 3) South Side of Pittsburgh. After the company expanded the operations on the South Side in 1950 (see Collection image at http://bradystewartphoto.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/Pittsburgh-Area-Businesses-that-Are-Gone/G0000Lwd.yRmewhk/I00009tP25Uk1iho), the plants in Carnegie and McKees Rocks were closed soon after.

The Brewery came upon tough times in the early 60s and tried to merge with Pittsburgh Brewing but it was shot down by government due to anti-trust concerns. After a bitter stock battle between the two largest investors, the Friday Family and Raymond Sigesmund, the company ended up in the hands of Sigesmund. The new images were taken in 1965 when Lando Advertising Agency had the account. The Duquesne account was moved to Admark in the late 1966 when Sigesmund’s son-in-law, Franklyn Jeans was installed as President. Franklyn Jeans was also the President of Admark. The Brewery financial troubles continued until 1972 when the company’s assets were sold to C Schmidt and Sons of Philadelphia.

B) “Pour a Koehler Collar”: The original Erie Brewing company was founded in 1889 and closed in 1976. In 1847, Charles Koehler sold his land in Holland and sailed to America with his wife. He decided that he would become a brewer and established a small plant at 25th and Holland in Erie, Pennsylvania. He passed the brewing formula to his oldest son, Frederick, together with brother Jackson and partner A. L. Curtze and they continued the business as Fred Koehler & Co. Jackson Koehler left the firm in 1883 to buy the nearby Kalvage Brewery and both continued to operate independently until they decided to merge with the C.M. Conrad and Cascade Breweries to form the Erie Brewing Co. in 1899. The firm was managed by descendants of Jackson Koehler until 1979 when the company was purchased by C. Schmidt & Sons, Inc.

By 1906, the brewery had four products on the market, DuBois Wurzburger, Hahne’s Export Pilsner, DuBois Porter and the famous DuBois Budweiser. When the Anheuser-Busch Company heard that the DuBois Company was using the name “Budweiser,” they filed a lawsuit against the brewery. For over sixty years the DuBois Brewing Company defended its right to use the name “Budweiser.

During Prohibition DuBois made a number of non-alcohol related products to stay in business. After Prohibition, they continued to produce its four major products and remained successful until the 1960s. As with most of the other regional brewers, the 1960s were a decade of consolidation. J Hahne Jr sold the brewery to the Pittsburgh Brewing Company (Iron City) in 1967. The images included in the Collection were taken in the early 1970s for local advertising agency Thomas, Matelan Inc.

D) Old Bushmills Whiskey: Old Bushmills distillery is one of the oldest breweries in the world and the oldest in Ireland. The advertising was created by Lando Advertising and the studio photography completed at Brady Stewart Studio, Inc. Old Bushmills Whiskey was a favorite of Brady Stewart Jr and was also a Stewart family remedy for a bad cold. Take a shot of Bushmills with a strong cup of black coffee… cold and congestion gone!
